Tesla says its Model S sedan is the safest car ever tested by the government. The electric car maker says its recent five-star safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration set a new record for the lowest likelihood of injury to occupants.

Not having a gasoline engine in the front like most cars gives the Model S has a longer "crumple zone," which helps it absorb a high-speed frontal impact.

It also scored off the charts in the side pole intrusion test, rear crash test and for rollover risk.
