(KFYI News) – It looks like Jobing.com Arena will soon be going away.
Not the building, but the name.
The Arizona Coyotes have announced a new partnership with Gila River Casinos for a new naming-rights contract. If the Glendale City Council approves at their meeting on September 9th, the venue will become known as Gila River Arena.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
According to the Coyotes, it would be the first federally recognized Tribal naming rights deal with a sports venue that houses one of four major professional sports leagues in the country.
Another local sports venue, Salt River Fields just outside the city limits of Scottsdale, is owned by the Salt River-Pima-Maricopa Indian Community and is home to the Arizona Diamondbacks and Colorado Rockies for spring training.
In an ironic twist, Gila River Arena would be located only about a mile from the proposed site of a casino being planned by the Tohono O'odham Nation. The Gila River casinos are in the southern part of the Phoenix metro area.
